WIDEBOYS INTERVIEW

Heres another BIG interview on the blog , courtesy of the wideboys , dont forget to check out the links at the end of the interview.

Lets start from the beginning , How did the 2 of you meet ?

We met was back in the mid 90’s – Jim was running a full time recording studio which he was hiring out to Dj’s from around the country and Ed was running a record shop called VIP Vinyl and was part of a small studio collective. Ed called Jim to arrange a meet. The rest is history.

Where did the name "wideboys" come from ?

One day everything just came to us. We sat down and said were going to do this, this and this and we are going to be called the Wideboys and that is what we did. We are both cheeky and have a bit of a laugh and back in the day were a little dodgy like the old Wideboy wheeler dealers.

How did you get your 1st big break ?

Our very very very first break was when Colin Aubrey responded to a tape we sent him. Back in those days it was all about C90 cassette tapes and we literally send out hundreds to labels all over the place. Colin was running nights at Bagleys in London at the time, heard the track, called us up and signed us for our first UK garage record deal. Jimmy & Andy from Public Demand and Andy Lewis from Locked On were instrumental in bringing us through to the masses.

How does the 90s clubbing scene compare to todays clubbing scene ?

It was different. For a start clubs used to be proper smokey and for us it was all about getting on the dancefloor early and getting off it late, although you still get very special parties these days there seems to be more red tape around organising events.

Your releases and remixography is HUGE but have you got a favourite track you have worked on?

Working on Rihanna’s “Good Girl Gone Bad” album and collaborating with MJ Cole back in the day were huge honours for us.

If you could remix any track currently in the top 40 what would it be and why ?

Either Adelle or Jessie J because they are both such great talents and really put a curveball in to fresh and exciting music. We have worked quite a lot of the acts that are in the current top 40 J

When you guys are not working how do you like to relax ?

Jim – Bike Riding, Dog Walking, Cooking, Guitar Playing
Ed – Meditation, Martial Arts, Piano Playing, Eating

What has been your highlight of 2011 ?

There have been a lot and we count are blessing every day to be involved in something we love doing. Starting our new label and releasing our debut track on it “Shopaholic” with Sway & McLean, working with some of the World’s greatest talents with our remixes, landing a show on Kiss Fm and releasing our Addicted to Bass albums with Ministry of Sound J

What remixers have really stood out for you this year ?

These are the producers and remixers who have stood out for us this year Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Netsky, Benny Benassi, R3hab, Flux Pavillion & Doctor P, Mike Delinquent Project, Chuckie, Afrojack, Axwell, Calvin Harris, Nero, Swedish House Mafia, Sub Focus, Friction , Dj Fresh, the Prototypes, Sigma, Deadmau5, Mj Cole, Danny Byrd, Nu Tone, Michael Woods, Wolfgang Gartner.

Any new producers you would recommend people look out for ?

Cutline, Seed, Dream, Tantrum Desire, Mord Fustang.

What are you doing this new years eve ?

Playing the midnight set with Majestic in the depth of Wales.

What can we expect from you guys in 2012 ?

You can expect loads of new music and releases on the label. A new Addicted to Bass compilation. Some exciting twists to the Kiss Fm show. Nurturing some new talented producers and artists. Developing our live shows. We are currently running some remix competitions via our facebook and soundcloud to unearth some new underground talent so if your an up and coming producer get involved!
A HUGE THANK YOU TO JIM & ED (WIDEBOYS) FOR THE INTERVIEW , WE REALLY APPRECIATE IT

SONNY WHARTON INTERVIEW

A man that needs no introduction in the world of house music , Sonny Wharton !!!

1. When did you first realise you wanted a career in music ?

Around 14 or 15 i suppose but I never actually thought i would get one!

2. What came 1st djing or producing ?

DJing, ive only really been producing for the last 3or4 of years

3. Who influenced you in djing and producing before you got your big break ?

Carl Cox is probably my biggest influence as an artist - the way he rocks a room is like no other!

4. You shot to fame when you won a DJ Mag mix tape competition , Can you remember what went through your head when you found out you had won ?

I honestly could not believe it!! I almost didnt take the call because i was in Ibiza with hardly any money and when my mobile rang i wasnt sure if i had enough credit to accept the call... i gotta say im pretty glad i did now!

5. Tell us about your 1st ever dj gig ?

Aside from playing at a couple of friends parties i suppose my first proper paid dj gig was at a local pub in my home town. The owner had gone away for the week and left a friend of mine in charge who decided she would let me dj there for the weekend - its was actually amazing, the place was full and going crazy with ppl dancing on the tables and causing alsorts of carnage! I ended up playing there every week after that - i was hooked!!

6. What made you want to start your own record label , Whartone ?

Its something id wanted to do for a long time - aswell as a home to put out my own tracks i was getting sent so many good tunes from producers with nowhere to release their stuff i thought it would be great to give them a platform to develop on and kind of build the label as a bit of an extended family... its great to see how far some of these guys have come since then!

7. 2011 seems to have been a hectic year for you , what have been your highlights ?

Its a bit of a tricky one to answer as ive really enjoyed this year!! On a gig tip maybe V Festival or playing 10th anniversary of the Wickerman Festival and production wise getting signed to Skint Records and remixing Fatboy Slim

8. What has been your big tune of 2011 ?

D-Nox & Beckers - 19909 (Sonny Wharton Remix) [Lokik]

9. Favourite producers of 2011 ?

David Herrero, DJ Chus, Sick Elektrik, Kaiserdisco, Format B, Paul Thomas

10. If money was no object for an event , what would be your dream line up and where would you hold the event ?

Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, Carl Cox, Danny Tenaglia and Zero 7 live on Benirras beach in Ibiza

11. Who should we look out for in 2012 ?

Sick Elektrik, Dirty Secretz, Dom Kane, Steve Haines, Ben Coda, Ted Nilsson, Jon Kong & Chris Aidy, Hooker & De Fretais

12. What can we expect from sonny wharton over the next few months ?

My Fatboy Slim remix comes out next month, also collabs with X-Press 2, DJ Chus, Joel Edwards, K-Klass and DONS, also keep your ears peeled for a new mix compilation on Skint

13. What have you got planned for New Years Eve ?

This year im playing a massive secret mansion party here in the UK - i dont think the location has been revealed yet but it sounds exciting!! Keep your eyes on my site www.sonnywharton.com for the full event info when its announced!

HAYLEY PARSONS INTERVIEW

Hayley Parsons is fast becoming one of the most in demand female DJs in the UK , So naturally we asked her for an interview and guess what ? ...................... Here it is

1. What came 1st , djing or production ?

For me it was more production, I did Music at College where i composed my own music using Piano and i also sung and the song writing followed. The Djing came a few years later when i moved into a share house full of boys an toys an jumped on one of my housemates 1210's. I then saved up an brought my own CDJ's and i havnt looked back since. I then started learning how to use different platforms to compose music, Cubase being my favourite, I have had a really good teacher which i thank him a lot for we now have a studio in our house which i cant keep out of haha.

2. Tell us about your 1st ever dj gig ?

Hummm ummm yeah it was in a bar in Warsall Birmingham, luckily no one was there so i was able to relax and get into it.

3. What has been your favourite gig you've played ?

This is such a tough question can i have two please ?! hehe , Club Mass Seoul in Korea was and is indescribable, the people there are so passionate about the music and so friendly, i have played there twice an going back for a third time in December i cannot wait, I'm so excited!!! My second place is India, I did a tour of 5 citites over the summer an again the people there are amazing, it reminded me of how clubbing was maybe 10 years ago here in the UK, they really love the more underground progressive side as well which suits me to a T!!!! :)

4. Whats the funniest thing thats ever happened to you when djing ?

I was asked this question actually the other month and laugh everytime,  i once DJ'd at a club in Guilford an the manager of the club had set up a stage but with the decks positioned so that my back was to the crowd an i was facing a wall LOL!!! really bizzare!!! hahah

5. What your favourite tool to use when djing ? (eg an effect , sample , acapella)

I am bit obsessed with the delay/echo an WAH on the Pioneer EFX 1000 ops!!, my new residency in Leicester has a DJM 2000 which i am just trying to master now, its basically a Pioneer EFX 1000 built into the mixer, its ace because you can cut out different frequencies and effect them separately. It also has a fuction that you can sample a sound from one of ya CDj's an actually send it to another channel an effect it separately in the mix, my favourite though is if you add a the trans to that channel it then sounds like your side chaining the effect in with the mix as its synced with the master, if im correct... .. exciting!!! ..... mind blowing!!!

6. What has been the highlight of your career so far ?

There have been so many exciting adventures, i have been really lucky but have also worked hard to succeed to this point (not sure what point it is mind haha) one thing that stands out i guess would be more studio based, just being able to learn and achieve things in the studio which a few years ago i would have looked at with 'rabbit caught in headlight eyes' haha I still have so much learning to do, that is the nature of this industry, the possibilities are endless.

7. If you could produce a track with anyone in the world who would it be and why ?

Yes love this question, Manuel De La Mare he is such an inspiration to me, i dont think he has made a bad track yet. Stefano Noferini and Sonny Wharton again the same reasons, techno producer would have to Phunk Investigation and progressive artist would be Paul Thomas, i have followed his career for a while now an love every track he produces.

8. What djs have caught your attention in 2011 ?

For me I have to say, The Futuristic Polar Bears, guys watch this space, next year i think they are taking over!! haha also Sonny Wharton, again fab producer one one of the best skilled DJ's i have seen.

9. What has been your tune of 2011 ?

So many tunes but lets go on the basis of how many times i have played it haha Metrum by Fedde Le Grand (Manuel De La Mare remix) great tune can fit it into a techno, progressive or tech house set, perfect floor filler!!!

10. Any big events lined up over the next few weeks ?

Yeah there is a lot in the pipeline to look forward to, musically i have a few collaberations coming out as well as a new material of my own, gig wise off to Seoul Korea again in December, looking at getting another India tour together also Jakarta and maybe Bangkok as well just waiting on confirmation of dates at the moment so all fingers an toes are crossed :)

11. What can we expect from you in 2012 ?

Scary thought isnt it 2012!!! arrh where has the time gone!! hopefully more music, singing and collaberations, will see what happens. I really enjoy doing my radio show / podcast 'Dual Velocity' that i have with DJ Vicky Devine so might edge more towards the live radio side of things who knows what the future may bring, all i know is just to grab every opportunity thats presented to you and enjoy every minute of it!! Thanks for the interview guys xxxxxx
