JINI COWAN INTERVIEW

When making a shortlist for DJs/Producers we wanted to interview for the blog Jini was 1 of the 1st names we wrote , this young lady has had such an amazing year , both dj and production wise , so naturally we asked her for an interview ....... here it is

1. What made you want to become a dj/producer ?

I've been brought up classically since the age of 8 , playing the flute and piano which i completed both upto grade 8 level. I was also involved in orchestras for 4 years , and at the age of 16 decided that i wanted to take a closer look at the more electronic side of music. Now , almost 4 years later , its definitely one of the best decisions i've ever made! I've always been a creative person , and loved the idea of being able to create my own sound!

2. Who are your biggest influences ?

There are literally too many to name , but to be honest ... any young up and coming producers like Maya Jane Coles , H2 , Richy Ahmed ... showed me that it doesn't matter your age or gender ... everyone can achieve their dreams if they just believe.

3. The last 12 months must have changed so much for you , tell us your highlights from the last year

Definitely , The last 12 months have been insane ... so much has happened to me career wise in such a small space of time that i don't think its really sunk in properly! Releasing my 1st EP in August is definitely a massive highlight for me , as i'd never released anything or even made any tunes before then ... gave me a huge confidence boost.
Being offered a residency with Hed Kandi obviously is one of the most prominent or being featured in Tillate's magazine as their "one to watch in 2011" ... this was a huge reality check for me , this is a mag that i used to read a couple of years ago , so to see myself in there was pretty mind blowing. Really taught me to always believe in myself!

4. If you could choose anyone in the industry to do a vocal for 1 of your tracks who would it be and why ?

Even though she's sadly no longer with us , i'd pick Loleatta Holloway without a shadow of a doubt , her voice is powerful and unique which is why i think it suits house music so well! She is one of the true pioneers of house music and her memory will live on for centuries to come!

5. Do you have a signature track that you always play ? if so what is it ?

I have too many of these to pick from!

6. What dj would you most want to do a back2back set with ?

Guy Gerber or M.A.N.D.Y. both are fantastic producers and djs , I saw M.A.N.D.Y. dj'ing a couple of weeks ago and their set was incredible.

7. What is your all time favourite tune and why ?

Again , This is very difficult to narrow down to one single track ... but one of my favourites and one of the first house tracks i ever heard is Guy Gerber & Sholmi Aber - After love , i can listen to this over and over again without becoming bored!

8. Tell us about your last big night out clubbing ?

I'm a real night owl , always out at the weekends! But my last major night out was probably tales of us/Danny Daze @ Sankeys , Manchester. Let's just say i went out on the Saturday afternoon and came home on Sunday at 9pm! Very very heavy session!

9. Who are your favourite djs at the minute ?

Really liking Loko , Tanner Ross , Solomun , DJ T , Lee Curtiss , Ryan Crosson at the moment! Making some fiery tracks too!

10. Whats the funniest thing thats ever happened to you whilst djing ?

As a female DJ , as im sure many others can relate to this , you meet all sorts of funny characters! But i think the funniest memory i have is when i was djing as a resident in Manchester at purple pussycat , a guy gave me 20 pounds just for playing what he called "good music" i definitely wasn't complaining.

11. Any events or clubs you would recommend ?

In Manchester , there are many good nights that i've attended , but recently its the smaller more intimate venues that have put on the best events; i'd definitely say Idiosync , Josh Brooks. Micron , Josh Brooks. Coloursound , sound control and of course the warehouse project.

12. Whats next for Jini Cowan ?

To be honest , i don't really like expecting anything too quick , as so far everything in my career has been an unexpected surprise! The future for me is unpredictable! But i'd like to think that my aim for next year is to get on the Ibiza DJ circuit as well as other international venues ... Watch this space folks!
